Shark Maths

Will I ever be able to be a shark biologist?

I love sharks and It’s been my dream for as long as I can remember to research them and dive with them and be a shark biologist. Their so fascinating. But my grades in math are not too good and have never been. I’m a good student in biology though. What can I do to prepare for a job like this? (I’m in High school)

if your overall grades are good enough to get into a zoology or biology program you might get there. There are not going to be a lot of jobs in that field, but if you are serious enough and are interested enough to work hard even when it’s tough (you will have to take some general ed classes which you might not like, including math at university) then it’s not impossible. It’s just very difficult. If you get discouraged easily don’t even start, but if you are capable of following through you might get there.
Basically get an undergrad degree in zoology or biology. Make sure you get good grades. Look into volunteering at places like aquaria or a zoo which keeps a lot of fishes. Try to get actual research experience in labs at your school, it does not necessarily have to do with fish or aquatic biology. If you can be a research assistant in a lab during summer that’s going to be a big plus on your CV, particularly if your boss likes your work.
It’s not that important where you go as an undergrad, but while an undergrad you will want to start to figure out which school you need to go when going to graduate school. Read up about various shark research in scientific journals and find out which field interests you. there are probably labs which work on sensory biology, physiology to ecology using sharks. Find one or a few labs whose work really interests you and apply to go to that graduate school with the aim to do your research and thesis in that particular lab. You might also ask if you can visit a few places while still an undergraduate student. If you go there you also will get an idea how they people are and whether the graduate students in the lab are happy (not all researchers are equally nice, some labs are happy, some aren’t because they might have a difficult boss). If you talk to the researcher and impress them with your interest they might remember your name once your graduate student application comes around. You could also check if you could do an internship in their lab over summer while still a undergraduate student.
You can also check if organizations like earthwatch offer trips which involves working with marine animals or even sharks. Though those trips can be expensive.

After you got your graduate degree working with sharks you should know whether you personally have any chances in the field or not.
