Mathematics Graduates

What GPA will I need to get into a mathematics graduate program?

I’m not shooting for an Ivy-league school or anything.

3.0 is like the minimum to get into ANYTHING decent. 3.5 is about average and more than that is better as you get higher. In addition, you need to have really good grades in some core classes too as an undergraduate. Those classes depend on what option you are in. Are you applied math, pure math, statistics and probability, or in the teaching option?

The following classes should be solid with at least a B+ or an A for all options.

real analysis/advanced calculus
linear algebra

For applied math, you also need a good background in
differential equations
intro to applied math
math modeling
and if possible PDE as an undergrad

for pure math you need better grades in
abstract algebra (maybe two courses if possible)
an additional course in real analysis
complex analysis

if you can also get topology as an undergrad, it is not usually required, but if you can get it, it will look really good when you apply to any grad school. It is the basis for ALL graduate math and is also a prerequisite for all courses and it is also the first one taken when one starts grad school in math.

Furthermore, if you can get some original research done as an undergrad, that would look really really really good on your application. It doesn’t need to be anything fancy and you don’t have to have it published either. If you tell them that you just helped a professor with some minor task in his research and then the professor also wrote you a letter of recommendation, you are almost guaranteed to get in where you want to go because undergrad research is unheard of. You are not required to do it and you look very good if you yourself took the initiative to do it. Universities will compete for you. they want student like you.
