Ks3 Maths Curriculum
I would be grateful if you can help me with question below:?
My 13yo stepson has just moved in with us for the first time and after
asessing his maths over the last week, I have concluded that he is currently only just working at Level 4 of the KS3 curriculum, way below what he should be.
I am concerned about his starting at a new school in September and want to give him the best opportunity I can to catch up over the next month and after he starts school. I don’t believe that there is anything wrong with him, although he talks a lot about a lack of support at his previous school.
I know this is a very general question but can you advise on where to begin with tutoring him at home? Hope you can help somehow!!
I agree with the previous suggestion of maybe enrolling him in some sort of tutoring program. However, I know that tutoring can be pretty pricey, so if that’s out of your budget, there are some other options. One of the most important things your stepson should get a handle on is his multiplication tables, preferably up to the 12 times tables. This is just a simple matter of memorization, which means that if you purchase/make flash cards with the times tables on them, and practice regularly with your son, he should improve soon.
If you were looking to purchase some books, an excellent program is the Miquon math program, and if you wanted to move to the next level after Miquon, that would be the “Key to” books (such as “Key to Algebra, Key to Geometry, although I think these would be too difficult at this point.) Even if you don’t buy a program of books, just simply practicing the basics will a) make things like adding and subtracting more natural to your son and b) give you a better idea of your son’s learning method. This will help you to explain your son’s difficulties to his future teachers as well as determine if it’s possible that he has a learning disability after all.
Hope this helps!
