We introduce Venn diagrams with one set in foundation stage, with children aged 4/5. Two set and overlapping diagrams are introduced during ks1 and by year six (age 10/11) children are expected to draw and interpret Venn diagrams with three sets. One issue often neglected by teachers is the universal set that is outside the chosen sets. This should be introduced at the same time as the single set diagram, as ‘everything else goes outside’.
Algebraic expressions are introduced at a later stage.
