Maths help?
Hi,
I have just been given this formula
1. Grab a calculator. (you won’t be able to do this one in your
head)
2. Key in the first three digits of your phone number (NOT the area code)
3. Multiply by 80
4. Add 1
5. Multiply by 250
6. Add the last 4 digits of your phone number
7. Add the last 4 digits of your phone number again.
8. Subtract 250
9. Divide number by 2
and it comes out with your phone number… how does this work? (Please keep it fairly simple for non maths brains!)
Well yeah, it is easier to just put your numbers in but I’m trying to work out how it works

X = your first 3 digits
Y = last 4
If we follow the algorithm we get:
(((X*80)+1)250+Y+Y-250)/2
(20 000X+250+2Y-250)/2
(20 000X+2Y)/2
Simplifying we get:
10 000 X + Y
So in reality your are multiplying your first 3 digits (XXX) by 10 000, it “pushes” your numbers 4 digits to the left
(XXX0000)
and then you add the last 4 numbers of your phone (YYYY) to it…
(XXX0000)+(YYYY) = (XXXYYYY)
