Classroom Maths Display Ideas
Creating an interactive math bulletin board?
I need to create an interactive math bulletin board for my classroom. We’re doing measurements and I need something that will give them practice converting within the English and Metric systems, as well as between the two systems. We don’t have a lot of display room, so I need something simple but something that will also get the idea across.
Any ideas?
(5th grade, lower level math classroom)
I once had a BB that was a tree with just branches. Then on the branches I had push pins – the heavier duty kind. Or map tacks with the rounded head would also work well. Then I had two pins in a tree hole. One year I had a bigger BB, so I put enough pins down the middle of the trunk so that each pair could be hung on the trunk and left there.
Then I would cut out leaves green or fall colored, snow, or flowers, hearts, – any shape depending on the season/unit etc. with a hole punched in them so they could be hung on the pins
Each unit I had a “matching” game. On the front of the leaf/snow/flower would be the content to match, and on the back would be a way to self check.
The kids would match the shapes and hang it on the trunk pins.
For example, in your case I may have them match the English measurement with the equivalent Metric measurement. So I might have on one snow flake “39 1/3 in” on another “1 m” or “I in” then “2.54 cm” then on the back they would each have the letter “A”, “B” etc. so the students can self correct. Or – to make it harder, you could have a self checking sheet that they refer to after they have made all the matches.
Then it would be up to the kids to rescramble the shapes onto the tree branches when they were done. The more they did it, the faster they got and the more they memorized the content.
It was something I could keep year after year, easily update, and keep seasonal.
It served me well.
